Sindh launches digital property registration system for overseas Pakistanis

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Wednesday has termed the launch of digital property registration a revolutionary and historic initiative for overseas Pakistanis, calling the new system helpful in eliminating long-standing hurdles faced by expatriates in buying and selling properties. "Under the new mechanism, overseas Pakistanis would be able to complete sale deeds online through Pakistani missions abroad. Following amendments to the Sindh Registration Act, the citizens would no longer be required to appear in person at registration offices," said Sharjeel in a statement. He said the NADRA-linked e-registration system has introduced biometric and facial verification to ensure transparency and security. “These measures will not only restore the confidence of overseas Pakistanis but will also help curb property fraud,” he added. Sharjeel further stated that the e-stamping system has been handed over to the Sindh Information Technology Company (SITC), describing it as a major step towards digital autonomy of the province. In this regard, he said, a five-year service agreement has been signed at Rs7 million per month with a 10 per cent annual increase. He said a modern fruit and vegetable market would be established in Larkana at a cost of Rs4.8 billion to strengthen the agriculture economy. The project will include a boundary wall, modern drainage system, administrative block, medical facilities, banking services and a green belt to facilitate farmers and traders. Read More: Expat investors bedeviled by property fraud The minister also announced that consumer courts would be converted into traffic courts to ensure speedy disposal of traffic-related cases and prompt justice to citizens. He disclosed that Rs342 billion was frozen in 635 cases in the form of bank guarantees, adversely affecting development activities. However, he said, the Sindh cabinet has approved a comprehensive settlement of the Sindh Development and Maintenance of Infrastructure Cess dispute. Under the agreement, 15 per cent of the admitted dues will be paid in three phases, while the remaining amount will be recovered in 12 equal annual instalments. Sharjeel added that under the Export Facilitation Scheme, complete exemption on re-exports is being granted to promote trade and economic activity. He further announced that the Sindh government has decided to expand protected mangrove areas in the Indus Delta. In this regard, 405,002 acres of intertidal land in Sujawal district have been declared protected forest, which will serve as a natural barrier against cyclones and tidal surges. Also Read: Expats' property woes As per the international standards, he said, 25 per cent of land should be covered by forests, whereas Sindh currently has only 10 per cent protected or reserved forest area. With this decision, the already protected 566,298 hectares in the Indus Delta will further increase, he added.
